SUMMARY:The MWR&BC & BRECON FOLK CLUB Presents RAPHAEL CALLAGHAN Live at Kensington Church Brecon...
DESCRIPTION:~~CELEBRATING OUR TWELTH YEAR in 2026 ~~ \nThe first MWR&BC event of 2026 will feature\nNorth Wales / Liverpool based RAPHAEL CALLAGHAN & will be a joint MWR&BC & BFC presentation. \n \nRaphael brings his own brand of blues and gospel to Brecon for the first time on Sat 24th January 2026.\nEureka moments for Raphael were hearing Louisiana Blues by Muddy Waters on the Radio in the late ’50s\, then seeing Alexis Korner’s Blues Inc at a tiny basement club in his home city of Liverpool in 1964 when he was still at school.\nThen came The Country Blues LP on RBF with Blind Lemon Jefferson\, Bukke White and more\, and he was hooked. He first got together as harmonica player with singer Jim James in 1966 – yes\, that’s 60 years ago – and in 1969 they made their debut recordings for the Liberty label produced by Tony McPhee.\nAfter the duo parted in 1972\, Raphael took up guitar but never had the patience to learn ‘proper’ chords so invented his own alternate tunings and added melodic slide. He began writing his own Blues songs and in 1993 won the inaugural Contemporary Blues Song of The Year Award at the Great British R & B Festival at Colne.\nIn a long and varied career\, he’s played with Alexis Korner\, Jo Ann Kelly\, Eric Bibb\, Bonnie Raitt\, Jessie Mae Hemphill and more.\nHe has three solo albums\, the new one Always in Arrears described as ‘his best yet’ in Blues In Britain magazine.\nDiscover him for yourself at Kensington Baptist Church . . . \nThe SGA Hermione Wild and The Sweet Bones…\nTogether they bring the raw beauty of traditional folk music with the spark of original song-writing. Their repertoire moves between traditional Welsh and British tunes and original songs inspired by the folk tradition.\nhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61563242491962 \nFar more at.\nhttps://www.raphaelcallaghan.com/\n    \nhttps://www.facebook.com/raphael.callaghan \nwww.midwalesrandb.club \nAngus Kings \n0786 6000 596\nangus@midwalesrandb.club \nTicket Price £20  Doors Open 7pm with showtime at 7.30pm

Julian played guitar on Lazy Lester’s 1987 album Rides Again which won a Blues Music Award. Right from the outset\, the remarkable intelligence and sensitivity of his lyrics is breath-taking. \nSteve’s soulful voice and delicate guitar accompaniment provide a perfect vehicle for his songs. \nSee a full review of his gig with us last February via this link. \nhttp://midwalesrandb.club/2025/02/02/steve-ferbrache-plus-hermione-wild/ \nFor more details. \nhttps://steveferbrache.com/ \n \nDON’T TELL JOHNNY are a popular acoustic folk band from South Wales that play a range of styles from Blues to Americana\, covering songs by Tom Waits to Gillian Welch\, along with a few original compositions. SUMMARY:MWR&BC Presents live music at The Brecon Tap with GWYN ASHTON...
DESCRIPTION:Gwyn Ashton (born 1960\, Wales) is a Welsh–Australian blues\, rock guitarist and singer-songwriter. \n \nHe has released ten albums and continues to tour Australia\, Europe and North America. \nGwyn Ashton\, one of the hardest working and powerful one-man bands\, is back touring a new solo album titled Mojosoul and a brand new single Get Outta Town with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus and members of Australian bands Cold Chisel and Superjesus. \nIn 2023 he’s smashed stages across The Netherlands and Belgium with prog rockers Wishbone Ash\, co-headlined the Adelaide Guitar Festival in Australia and relentlessly blazed his way across Wales\, England\, Serbia\, Bosnia\, Germany\, Czechia\, Slovakia and Poland. 2024 dates include an Australian tour and he’s booked for a mainstage performance at the prestigious Great British R&B Festival. \nAshton is on the top of the list of the new wave of modern blues rock artists\, as spearheaded by The Black Keys\, Jack White\, Seasick Steve et al. A first class entertainer he oozes stagecraft and showmanship\, combining songs and stories from a road well-travelled with dextrous guitar playing\, blasting out drum beats on Bill Ward’s old Black Sabbath drum kit\, grinding fuzz bass lines with his thumb while he viciously attacks his guitar with a bottleneck slide\, singing and blowing blues harp into a lofi radio microphone. \nInspired by the likes of Hendrix and David Lindley\, his “guit-arsenal” includes a rack full of electric and acoustic instruments including lap slide\, resonator\, 12-string and old pawn shop guitars. \nAshton has had multiple Tracks of The Week in the UK’s prestigious Classic Rock Magazine from 10 of his commercially released albums on which he’s collaborated with Don Airey (Deep Purple)\, Neil Murray (Whitesnake)\, Robbie Blunt (Robert Plant) and Rory Gallagher’s band. \n \n“The most versatile performer we’ve had” – Deep Ellum Blues Club\, Dallas\, Texas. “The king of feel” – Robert Plant. “A true bluesman” – Johnny Winter. “A real player” – David Crosby. With these accolades and every recording garnishing numerous Albums of The Week/Month/Year from UK and European guitar and rock press Ashton’s incredible live show keeps growing stronger and he’s bringing it to a town near you soon! \nFormerly with Virgin Records\, France\, Gwyn Ashton was lead guitarist in Europe with Band of Friends (Rory Gallagher’s band) and in Australia with Stevie Wright (Easybeats) and Jim Keays (Master’s Apprentices). He has shared stages with BB King\, Buddy Guy\, Ray Charles\, Peter Green\, Van Morrison\, Hubert Sumlin (Howlin’ Wolf)\, Mick Taylor\, Status Quo\, The Yardbirds\, Slade\, Robin Trower\, Steve Hackett\, Wishbone Ash\, The Troggs and more. He has been invited onstage to jam with Mick Fleetwood\, Canned Heat\, Walter Trout\, Elliot Randall (Steely Dan) and many others. \nhttps://www.gwynashton.com/ \nhttps://www.youtube.com/@GwynAshtonMusic \nThe Brecon Tap 9pm / free admission \nPA Supplied and run by Graham Strangward

SUMMARY:MWR&BC Presents LIZ JONES & BROKEN WINDOWS with SGA DISQUE BLEU...
DESCRIPTION:Live music at THE MUSE in BRECON (Home of the MWR&BC) \nAfter a very successful event at The Muse with Liz Jones and Suzy Cargill from Scottish act LIZ JONES & BROKEN WINDOWS on Sep 13th 2025. \nhttp://midwalesrandb.club/2025/09/14/liz-jones-suzy-cargill-from-liz-jones-broken-windows-with-special-guest-act-disque-bleu/ \nLiz & Suzy return with Liz’s full band some 7 months later (Re 18th April 2026) \n \nTwists of roots\, blues and psychedelia\, in a vibe that lies firmly with the 60s spirit of free music. Liz Jones & Broken Windows sound only like themselves\, but have been compared to Little Feat\, The Faces and Fleetwood Mac\, with similarities lying in group buzz on stage and a wave goodbye to neat boxes\, each tune simply taken on the path it carves. Live shows are a wild mix of personal expression\, genre celebration and individual musicianship. \nCorralling some of Scotland’s best players\, this six-piece have the talent to roam beyond the prescribed pentatonic box …\nthe title track (to Double Measures) is a winningly wonky gypsy-jazz lurch.\nClassic Rock Magazine \nFavourite review from the audience!\n“When this group of eclectic\, casual looking musicians join a stage\, you could be forgiven for thinking they’d be there to ‘entertain’\, a leg up from some decent gigging bar in their home town. At the end of the gig\, you are a fan\, wondering why they aren’t widely celebrated in the rockin live music world. There’s so much to love. Vocally\, musically\, in spirit and in energy\, they deliver original songs in a way that make you feel part of the band. You’re accepted because you are in it for the music\, for the songs\, the smiling\, the realness of confused genres\, stage wobbles and the shared secret that wild and free music is underground\, and it doesn’t care.” AUDIENCE REVIEW AFTER EDINBURGH FRINGE SHOW 2022!\n\nhttps://lizjonesmusic.com/brokenwindows \nSpecial Guests on the night will be DISQUE BLEU (who supported Liz & Suzy first time round) \n \nComprising of Ian Jones on bass and vocals and Julian Lewis on rhythm and lead guitar. An interesting mix of laid-back blues\, country and other genres. \nhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61561761297608 \nhttp://midwalesrandb.club/

SUMMARY:Guitarist\, vocalist\, raconteur Dave Peabody live at Kensington Church in Brecon...
DESCRIPTION:After a very successful trip to Brecon with Mark Hummel and Bob Hall. \nOne of the Uk’s finest musicians DAVE PEABODY returns to Brecon (Solo)  \nSIXTY YEARS ON THE ROAD… \n \nGuitarist\, vocalist\, raconteur Dave Peabody began performing in the mid ‘60’s during the heyday of the great British blues boom… and has now been a gigging musician for over 60 years. \nAs a solo acoustic artist Dave is recognised as specialist in early country blues and he’s achieved the accolade of being voted “Acoustic Blues Artist of the Year” three times by the British Blues Connection and Blues In Britain Magazine. \n \nDave’s first group was the Honest John Three. \nThe band won the National Jug Band contest in 1966 (one of the judges was Jo Ann Kelly) \nFrom 1967 to 1970 Dave moved from London to Plymouth\, Devon to attend Plymouth College of Art. He soon formed the Pongo Flossy Goodtime Merger\, a goodtime band that quickly became popular locally. With other members of the group\, Dave organised the Sincerity Hall Folk and Blues Club which booked many of the scenes name folk acts (Ralph McTell\, The Strawbs\, etc.) and British blues musicians such as Jo Ann Kelly\, Mike Cooper\, alongside American bluesmen Arthur “Big Boy Crudup and Juke Boy Bonner \nOn returning to London Dave formed Tight Like That. \nThey recorded an album (under an assumed name) for the French label Disques Vogue in 1971. \nThe following year they recorded their well thought of album Hokum for the Village Thing label. When Tight Like That wound up operations (around 1974) Dave\, for the rest of the decade played as the duo Peabody & McNulty with the band’s tea-chest bass player Hugh McNulty. The pair performed all around the UK’s folk club scene as well making incursions into Europe\, especially Belgium. When Hugh finally decided to retire his tea-chest bass\, Dave began a long association with blues and boogie pianist Bob Hall. Dave has also gigged with pianists Diz Watson and Colin Earl\, with the guitar players Gypsy Dave Smith and Steve Williams\, and with the harmonica players \nRob Mason\, Brendan Power and Alan Glen. \nFor 15 years (1996 – 2011) Dave fronted the electric King Earl Boogie Band as their vocalist and guitarist. The 5-piece band\, whose other members also included Mungo Jerry pianist Colin Earl and original Status Quo drummer John Coghlan\, played numerous festivals including Colne’s Great British R’n’B Festival and Havant’s Blues at The Fort. \nDave has appeared on over 50 albums including 11 albums under his own name\, \n4 with Bob Hall\, and 2 with the King Earl Boogie Band. The album Some of These Days (released March 2019) is a joint collaboration with classically trained violinist Regina Mudrich\, who is originally from East Germany. He’s performed at clubs and festivals in over 20 different countries (including the USA) making him one of the most experienced and seasoned British blues men performing today. Dave has forged connections with many American blues artists including Mississippi legend Honeyboy Edwards and Grammy award winning harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite\, accompanying them on British and European tours. Over the years\, Dave has played on stage with a host of other blues men including Sonny Terry\, Memphis Slim\, Louisiana Red\, Big Joe Duskin\, Big Boy Henry\, Chicago Bob Nelson\, Neal Pattman\, Dave Van Ronk\, John Hammond Jnr. and\, most recently\, Mark Hummel. \n“Dave Peabody enhanced his reputation as one of our most popular acoustic artists and raconteurs with a selection by the likes of the Memphis Jug Band\, Tommy Johnson\, Oscar “Buddy” Woods and Furry Lewis. plus a handful of his own compositions. There’s only one way to sum up this special evening – this was the Blues!”   (Blueprint online review of  a 100 Club gig 19/11/08) \nDoors 7pm / showtime 7.30pm with SGA (TBC) / 8.30pm Dave Peabody  \nFor more details on the musical adventure please PM Angus \nAngus Kings 0786 6000 596 \nBlues related. \nwww.midwalesrandb.club \nangus@midwalesrandb.club \nhttps://www.facebook.com/midwalesrhythmandblues \nhttps://www.instagram.com/themidwalesrandb/ \nDave Peabody links… \nhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCF1cZ75u40FMQ-ueYuneMPg
